Youth to Youth

Youth to Youth is a human rights education project directed towards children and young university students. Through human rights training, awareness raising and the promotion of volunteering, the project contributes to developing a human rights culture in which children and young people are aware of their rights and their obligations to others, contributing to their development as responsible members of a free, peaceful, pluralist and inclusive society.

The participants of the project are university students and children aged 5 to 18 years old.

jfjThrough this project, university students receive a course of academic training in human rights education, which addresses issues such as the norms and principles of human rights, the values that sustain them and the mechanisms that protect them; the global development agenda including the interdependent relationship between developed and developing countries; the importance of gender equality; the consequences of climate change; and the causes of the current crisis of migration. This training is complemented by a special six-hour session on the death penalty.

Once the training program has concluded, the university students put their knowledge into practice in schools that have previously agreed with Helsinki España to participate in the project.  University students encourage participation by making use of dynamic games and interactive activities. They teach values such as tolerance, non-discrimination and equality. The program specifically covers concepts such as the rights of children, the rights of people at risk of social exclusion and the rights of immigrants and refugees. Theproject is designed under the principles of equality, inclusion and non-discrimination.

The university students, far from being only listeners, become the real actors of the project and responsible for the transformation of their communities. The combination of training and volunteering is the most effective formula for the assimilation of concepts and acquisition of values. The children interact very positively with young university students who become role models, especially for middle and high school students.
